The captain of the Irish junior boxing team was taken to hospital after she was punched in the eye at her hotel by an adult male after a European tournament.
Mary Kate Nevin (15) won gold and the ‘Best Boxer Award’ at the Queens Cup in Germany on Saturday but just hours later she was allegedly punched in the eye by a Russian trainer after making noise in their hotel.
Irish Team manager Bernie Harold told Independent.ie that Mary Kate was brought to a nearby hospital where she was treated by doctors.
“We are absolutely appalled by what happened,” she said. “We have reported it to the police in Germany and they will be pursuing it. The IABA [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][Irish Athletic Boxing Association], the Russian Federation and the world body will be investigating it.”
Ms Harold, who is also the chairperson of Women’s Boxing nationally, explained that Ms Nevin, from Mullingar, and another competitor had travelled to another room in the hotel they were staying in Straslund on Saturday night when the altercation occurred.
